How many questions are on the Canadian Citizenship Test?

The test has 20 multiple-choice questions. You need to answer at least 15 correctly (75%) to pass.

What is the time limit?

You have 30 minutes to complete the test. Most people finish in 15–20 minutes.

What topics does the test cover?

The test covers rights and responsibilities of citizenship, Canadian history, government structure, geography, economy, and national symbols. All questions come from the Discover Canada study guide.

Where can I get the official study guide?

Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship is available free from the Government of Canada website in multiple formats (PDF, online, audio).

Who needs to take the citizenship test?

Applicants aged 18–54 at the time of applying must take the citizenship test. Applicants 55 and older are exempt.

Is the test in English or French?

You take the test in either English or French. The test itself does not assess your language ability — that is evaluated separately.

What happens if I fail?

If you fail, IRCC will arrange a second test (usually 4–8 weeks later). If you fail again, you may be invited to an interview with a citizenship official. After three failures, your application may be refused.

Is the test written or an interview?

The test is usually written (multiple-choice on paper or computer), but it could also be conducted as an interview in some cases.

How should I study?

Read the entire Discover Canada guide at least twice. Use practice tests to identify weak areas, and use flashcards for key dates, names, and facts.

Is ExamCanada.online an official test?

No. ExamCanada.online provides independent practice questions and study tools. Always use the official Discover Canada guide and confirm details with IRCC.

What do I bring to the test?

Bring your appointment letter, your Permanent Resident card, two pieces of personal ID, and all original documents submitted with your application.

What is the Oath of Citizenship?

After passing the test, you attend a citizenship ceremony where you take the Oath of Citizenship, pledging loyalty to the Sovereign (King Charles III) and promising to obey Canadian laws and fulfill your duties as a citizen.
