Alberta Class 7 study guide
This guide organizes the high-value Alberta Driver's Guide topics into plain language. Use it alongside the official guide.
Alberta Speed Limits
Default speed limits in Alberta and what they mean for safe driving.
- Residential areas: 50 km/h unless otherwise posted (some Edmonton neighbourhoods are 40 km/h).
- Primary highways outside cities: typically 100 km/h.
- Highway 2 (Queen Elizabeth II) and parts of Highway 3: up to 110 km/h.
- School zones: typically 30 km/h during posted hours (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM on school days).
- Playground zones: 30 km/h every day from 8:30 AM until one hour after sunset.
- Construction zones: reduced limits apply 24/7, fines doubled when workers present.
Right of Way
Rules for who goes first at intersections and shared spaces.
- At an uncontrolled intersection, the vehicle on the right has the right of way.
- At a 4-way stop, the first vehicle to come to a complete stop goes first.
- When turning left at a green light, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
- When entering a highway from an on-ramp, yield to highway traffic.
- When entering a roundabout, yield to traffic already in it.
- Yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks, marked or unmarked.
Class 7 Learner Restrictions
Rules and limits for Alberta Class 7 learner drivers.
- Must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver (Class 5+) at least 18 years old.
- The supervising driver must be in the front passenger seat.
- Driving allowed only between 5:00 a.m. and midnight.
- Must display a red 'L' decal on the front and back of the vehicle.
- Zero blood alcohol concentration (0.00 BAC) at all times.
- Must hold the learner's licence for at least 12 months before the Class 5 road test.
- 8 demerit points within 2 years results in licence suspension (stricter than full licence).
Sharing the Road
How to safely share Alberta roads with cyclists, pedestrians, large trucks, and emergency vehicles.
- When passing a cyclist, leave at least 1 metre of space.
- Stop in both directions for a school bus with flashing red lights (unless on a divided highway).
- Pull right and stop for emergency vehicles with lights and sirens.
- Slow to 60 km/h (or posted speed if lower) when passing stopped emergency or maintenance vehicles.
- Watch for wildlife on rural highways, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Give large trucks extra room — they have larger blind spots and longer stopping distances.
Winter Driving
Alberta winters bring snow, ice, and cold temperatures. Know how to handle them.
- Reduce your speed below the posted limit (which assumes ideal conditions).
- Increase following distance to at least 4-6 seconds in snow or ice.
- Never use cruise control on wet, icy, or slushy roads.
- If you skid, ease off the gas and steer in the direction you want to go — don't brake hard.
- Use winter tires for better traction (mandatory on certain BC mountain highways but recommended in Alberta).
- Carry an emergency kit: blanket, flashlight, food, water, jumper cables, and a shovel.
Impaired and Distracted Driving
Alberta's strict rules on alcohol, drugs, and distractions behind the wheel.
- Class 7 learners and Class 5 GDL drivers: zero BAC required at all times.
- Fully licensed drivers: criminal offence at 0.08 BAC; immediate sanctions at 0.05+.
- Hand-held electronic devices are illegal while driving — even at red lights.
- Distracted driving fine: $300 plus 3 demerit points.
- Cannabis impairment is treated the same as alcohol impairment.
- Drowsy driving impairs reaction time similar to alcohol.
Demerit Points and Penalties
How Alberta's demerit point system works and what happens if you accumulate too many.
- Demerit points are added to your record for traffic infractions.
- Class 7 learners face stricter penalties: 8 demerits in 2 years = suspension.
- Fully licensed drivers: 15 demerits in 2 years = suspension.
- Failing to stop for a school bus: ~$543 fine + 6 demerits.
- Distracted driving: $300 fine + 3 demerits.
- Speeding fines double in school and construction zones.
