Tips for the pre-trip check
Be systematic
Start from the driver door, walk around the vehicle clockwise. Check each item in order so you do not skip anything.
Talk through every check
The examiner needs to hear what you are checking. Say it clearly even if the answer is obvious.
Use specific language
Do not just say 'lights are fine.' Say 'the left headlight is functioning on low beam and high beam.'
Check before test day
Do the full inspection the day before. If a light is out or tires are low, fix it before the appointment.
Know where things are
Practice opening the hood, locating the dipstick, coolant reservoir, and brake fluid. Do not fumble on test day.
Stay calm if something is marginal
If a tire looks slightly low, say so honestly. The examiner is checking your awareness, not expecting perfection.
Pre-trip flashcards
Practice the exact phrases to use with the examiner.
