BC Class 7 study guide

This guide organizes high-value Learn to Drive Smart topics into plain language. Use it beside the official guide, not instead of it.

Speed limits

Know the posted limit first. When there is no posted sign, use the default rule for the road type and slow down for conditions.

  • Municipal roads are commonly 50 km/h unless signs say otherwise.
  • Highways outside municipalities default to 80 km/h unless posted.
  • School zones are 30 km/h during posted hours (check the sign).
  • Playground zones are 30 km/h dawn to dusk unless otherwise posted.
  • Speeding includes driving too fast for rain, fog, snow, glare, traffic, or road work.
  • Speed limit signs show the maximum legal speed in ideal conditions — not a target.

Right of way

Right of way is about preventing conflict, not proving a point. Be ready to yield when another road user may not understand the situation.

  • At uncontrolled intersections, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right when vehicles arrive together.
  • At a 4-way stop, the first to arrive goes first. If simultaneous, yield to the right.
  • When turning left on a green, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks — both marked and unmarked.
  • Vehicles entering a road from a driveway or parking lot yield to traffic already on the road.
  • Emergency vehicles with lights or sirens need immediate space — pull right and stop.

Parking

Parking rules protect sightlines, emergency access, and pedestrian safety.

  • 5 metres from a fire hydrant.
  • 6 metres from a crosswalk.
  • Do not park close to stop signs, driveways, or intersections.
  • Uphill with curb: turn wheels away from curb (left).
  • Downhill with curb: turn wheels toward curb (right).
  • No curb (uphill or downhill): turn wheels toward the shoulder.
  • Always set the parking brake on hills.

School and playground zones

Children can be unpredictable. Scan sidewalks, parked cars, and crosswalk approaches before you enter the zone.

  • Follow the posted sign and time rules — school zones have specific hours.
  • Expect sudden stops from buses and family vehicles.
  • Never pass a vehicle that has stopped for a pedestrian.
  • When a school bus flashes red lights, stop in both directions (unless separated by a median).

Intersections and signals

Most urban conflicts happen at intersections, so approach them with a slow, planned scan.

  • Check mirrors, signal early, and shoulder check before turns or lane changes.
  • Stop completely where required, then scan left, centre, right, and left again.
  • Solid yellow light: stop if you can do so safely.
  • Flashing green in BC: pedestrian-controlled intersection. Proceed but be ready to stop.
  • Flashing red: treat as a stop sign. Stop completely, then proceed.
  • Flashing yellow: proceed with caution.
  • Right turn on red: legal after full stop and yielding, unless sign says otherwise.

Lane changes and passing

Always signal, check mirrors, and shoulder-check before moving sideways.

  • Signal, check mirrors and blind spots before every lane change.
  • When turning right, turn into the closest right-hand lane.
  • Do not pass near hilltops, curves, intersections, or railway crossings.
  • Do not pass when a solid yellow line is on your side.
  • When merging onto a highway, match speed on the ramp before merging.

Highway driving

Higher speed means fewer seconds to recover from mistakes.

  • Use the acceleration lane to match traffic speed before merging.
  • Keep a safe following distance — at least 2 seconds, more in poor conditions.
  • Pass only when it is legal, visible, and necessary.
  • Check mirrors regularly and plan lane changes early.
  • HOV lanes are reserved for 2+ occupants during posted hours.

Sharing the road

Drivers share space with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, buses, trucks, and emergency vehicles.

  • Give cyclists at least 1 metre when passing.
  • Shoulder check for cyclists and motorcycles before moving sideways.
  • Give large vehicles more room — wider turns, bigger blind spots, longer stopping.
  • Watch for pedestrians at every crosswalk, even if unmarked.
  • When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights/sirens, pull right and stop.

Safe driving techniques

Defensive driving means anticipating hazards and maintaining space to react.

  • Minimum following distance: 2 seconds in good conditions. Increase in rain, snow, fog.
  • On icy roads: reduce speed, increase following distance, avoid sudden inputs.
  • In fog: use low beams or fog lights. Never use high beams.
  • High beams: use on dark roads with no oncoming traffic. Switch within 150 metres.
  • When backing up: turn your body and look directly behind you.
  • If you skid: ease off the gas, do not brake hard, steer gently where you want to go.

Emergencies

The safest emergency response is usually calm steering, controlled braking, and looking where you need the vehicle to go.

  • Tire blowout: hold the wheel firmly, ease off gas, slow gradually.
  • Brake failure: pump the brake pedal, downshift if possible, look for a safe escape.
  • Skid: ease off the accelerator and steer toward where you want to go.
  • Worn or bald tires reduce traction and increase stopping distance — check regularly.

Alcohol, drugs, and distractions

Impairment and distraction reduce reaction time before a driver realizes anything is wrong.

  • Do not drive after alcohol, cannabis, or impairing medication.
  • Class 7L and 7N drivers: zero BAC — zero tolerance.
  • Full licence: 0.05–0.08 BAC results in an immediate roadside prohibition.
  • Hand-held device while driving: $368 fine and 4 penalty points.
  • Put the phone away before moving — even hands-free can be distracting.

Learner restrictions (GLP)

BC's Graduated Licensing Program has specific rules for L and N drivers.

  • Class 7L: display a red L sign. One passenger plus your supervisor.
  • Class 7N: display a green N sign. One non-family passenger (unless a supervisor is present).
  • L drivers: no driving midnight to 5 AM (exceptions for work/school with supervisor).
  • L and N: zero BAC at all times.
  • Must carry your licence and insurance documents at all times.
