How many questions are on the Ontario G1 test?
The G1 test has 40 multiple-choice questions divided into two sections: 20 questions on rules of the road and 20 questions on traffic signs. You must pass each section independently with at least 16 correct answers (80%).
What is the minimum age to take the G1 test?
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for an Ontario G1 driver's licence.
How much does the G1 test cost?
The full G1 package costs approximately $158.25 in Ontario. This includes the knowledge test, your G1 licence, and your G2 road test. Confirm current fees with DriveTest.
Where do I take the G1 test?
G1 tests are administered at DriveTest centres across Ontario. No appointment is needed — tests are usually offered on a walk-in basis. Bring proper ID and payment.
What should I bring to the G1 test?
Bring acceptable identification (such as a Canadian passport, citizenship card, or Ontario ID), your immigration documents if applicable, and the test fee. Check the DriveTest website for current ID requirements.
What if I fail one section of the G1 test?
You can immediately retake the failed section by paying a retest fee of approximately $16. You only need to retake the section you failed, not the whole test.
How long must I hold a G1 before taking the G2 road test?
You must hold your G1 for at least 12 months, or 8 months if you complete an MTO-approved driver education course.
Can I drive alone with a G1 licence?
No. G1 drivers must always be accompanied by a fully licensed G driver with at least 4 years of driving experience. The accompanying driver must be in the front passenger seat.
Can a G1 driver drive on highways like the 401 or QEW?
G1 drivers cannot drive on 400-series highways or other high-speed expressways unless their accompanying driver is a licensed driving instructor.
What is the curfew for G1 drivers?
G1 drivers are not allowed to drive between midnight and 5 AM.
What is the BAC limit for G1 drivers?
G1 and G2 drivers in Ontario must have a blood alcohol concentration of zero. Any amount of alcohol while driving is prohibited and will result in penalties.
