Commercial Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

A pre-trip inspection is a systematic check you perform on a vehicle before driving it. For BC Class 4 commercial drivers — including taxi drivers, Uber and Lyft drivers, ambulance attendants, and small bus operators — the pre-trip inspection is both a road test requirement and a daily professional responsibility. ICBC examiners expect you to demonstrate the inspection in a specific order with the correct verbal scripts, not just point at parts of the vehicle.

The Class 4 inspection covers everything in the Class 5 standard inspection, plus commercial-specific checks: fire extinguisher, first aid kit, passenger handrails, step surfaces, emergency exits, and commercial lighting. You need to know the location, condition, and correct examiner script for every item. Saying “I would check the fire extinguisher is charged and accessible” is not enough — the examiner wants to hear the full script and see you physically indicate the location.
