Commercial inspection notes
Commercial vehicles require a thorough inspection
The pre-trip inspection for Class 4 is more detailed than Class 5. You must check all standard items plus commercial-specific equipment like fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits.
Know the equipment locations
Before the test, make sure you know exactly where the fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and emergency exits are located in the vehicle you will be driving.
Passenger safety is a priority
Commercial drivers are responsible for passenger safety. Check all seatbelts, handrails, step surfaces, and safety notices before every trip.
Air brake endorsement
If the vehicle has air brakes, you may need an air brake endorsement. This requires additional study and testing. Check ICBC requirements for your specific vehicle class.
Pre-trip becomes routine
As a commercial driver, you will do a pre-trip inspection before every shift. Learning it well now makes your daily routine faster and more reliable.
Document and report defects
Commercial drivers must report any vehicle defects. If you find something wrong during the pre-trip, report it to your employer or fleet manager before driving.
